Cautionary Copycat

I love how the ensembles on Polyvore look so cute and complete.  I can imagine it on a person so easily that I readily jump into the style.  Since I am not a 5'10" size 0 however, I sometimes have a hard time translating the outfit for my body.  Especially when the silhouette is a skinny one.  Or if it includes a scarf apparently.

I happen to have 2 different black scarves.  One is shorter than the other as you can tell from the first to the second image.  It's really obvious that I have a short neck when I have a scarf wrapped that tight to it!!  Wasn't a good look.  The second is ok, but its still too short I think.  I wore it, and no one threw things at me so I guess it would pass.  I also don't own a leopard bag so skipped that element all together.  In retrospect, would my long leopard scarf have done a better job than trying to recreate the look directly?  Possibly.

The lesson?  Be careful where your scarf lands or you could end up looking like it's trying to choke you.  AND don't use a belt unless you really need one.  I used one to tie in the brown boot since I didn't have the leopard bag to do it for me, but the inspiration is a slouchy look and I think it would have been best to leave it all slouchy.  Why don't I ever learn the lessons before I take the pictures??  I think my blog would be doing so much better if it weren't about what NOT to do.  LOL

XO,
Alyssa

It's Thursday so go check out Carly and Mary's link party and do a copycat post of your own.  I'm sure you'll be a DO!

  1. I have a hard time with Polyvore for the same reason. Sure everything looks great together, but how will they look on an actual body? That being said, I think you look great. I love that belt, don't think your scarf is too short and I'm pretty sure I have those same boots (Born Crown "Sosie"?).

    1. Gracey...and you have the opposite problem as me since you ARE tall. I guess its there for inspiration and not to copy directly for us. Thanks for your kind words. As to the boots, they are for sure Born Crown...I have no idea what the name of them is though. I picked them up at a Last Chance for $35 and have worn the heck out of them ever since! I'm going to go troll your blog to see if I can find pics of you in them!! I'm sure they hit lower on your calf than mine do with my shorty legs! LOL

  2. I have the short neck blues. I've seen some gorgeous scarves but I feel like I'm in a straight jacket when I wear one. So I don't. I'd love to wear you outfit. Wish I had the figure for it. But of course, without the scarf.

    1. Judy, I'm laughing at the strait jacket comment. You're funny. I guess I could have unwrapped it and let the ends hang, but I like the "infinity" look of the polyvore set. Live and learn, right! As to figures...after a certain age it should all just be dressing for yourself and to hell with everyone else, right?!

  3. You are right about the shorter scarf ... and I do like the second best. But I like the belt very much. Hmmm... *slouchy* is such a subjective idea. I'm trying to picture you without the belt, and I don't think the look would work as well if you removed it. I actually think you did a better job of styling than the inspiration. My preference is based on the way the belt relates to the sweater length and the tucked waist and your proportions. Kinda. Sorta. Imprecise, but do you see what I mean. You look really polished. I like polished!

    1. Thanks Jan...you're right on the money as usual. I do totally get what you mean, however imprecise you think you said it. When I do a slouchy look I tend to just look heavier, which at this point in time is not such a great thing! LOL.

  4. Girl...you look so cute! Don't event think that you're a what NOT to do blog, I always love your outfits.

I have trouble with scarves too. I own a ton of them but unless it an infinity scarf, I find myself having a hard time wearing them right.

PS: Being a size 0 is so overrated! ;) xo

  7. ha You're so funny and I can soooo relate. lol I air so many "what not to wear" episodes I should be cancelled. I take photos of outfits I put together when inspiration hits and then choose from my "outfit catalogue" most times to dress for the day. Things that look wonderful layed out on my bed sometimes just don't translate to "wonderful" on my body. But I post those darn photos anyway. My blog is my outfit diary...good, bad, or ugly. For me...it just helps seeing it live online to get the full effect of how it's working for me....or not. haha
You look great, btw. A simple white t-shirt with cardigan or blazer is a look I'm wanting to create more often.

    1. Lisa,
STOP you do not!!! I always love what you post. Although I'm totally with you on the outfit diary. That is usually what I am posting too. Perhaps I should rename it What I Wore Today, although I think someone already has that! LOL.
